Women at highest risks of having infant death or a low birth weight (premature) baby are those who:
- receive limited or no prenatal care
- become pregnant less than one year following their last delivery
- are in their teens
- smoke cigarettes
- 40 years of age and older
- use illegal drugs during pregnancy
- drink alcoholic beverages
- have poor eating habits
- have had a miscarriage or low birth weight
- (premature) baby
- have certain medical conditions in their family
- are experiencing stress
